It is a good idea to keep your medical equipment in good working order! Your health depends on it! A nebulizer is no different when it comes to keeping it clean as you use it daily.
Some Reminder Steps: How To Take Care Of Your Nebulizer
- Keeping it wiped down and free of germs. It’s a good idea to wipe down your nebulizer every couple of days with a damp, sanitized wipe. If you have it sitting on a kitchen table or a table next to your chair, people may pick it up to move it out of the way or to clean the area it’s sitting on. Having it free of germs is just another step in keeping you healthy!
- Keep the filter changed out. Every nebulizer has a small compartment, usually near where the air hose goes. It needs to be checked once a week to see if it needs to be changed. However, changing it once a month would be a good practice. Most nebulizers come with a nebulizer filter in it already and several in the box to change out when it needs to be replaced.
- Change out your nebulizer kit. What is a nebulizer kit? A nebulizer kit comes with tubing that has the same exact end on it. Either end can be used to plug into the machine or attach it to the bottom of the medicine cup. The medicine cup includes a part inside of it that creates the mist as you take your treatment. Also, the nebulizer kit comes with a mouthpiece and a rebreather or a mask. Most insurance companies will pay for two kits a month, so every 2 weeks you need to change them out. If your treatment seems to be taking longer than it normally does, that usually means it’s time to change out the nebulizer kit as well.
- Wash out your medicine cup and mouthpiece piece or mask after each use. Washing out your medicine cup and your mouthpiece, or your mask keeps everything working properly. The medicine can get built up inside the medicine cup and not create a mist for you to inhale. Then it defeats the purpose of doing a nebulizer treatment.
- As you add the medicine to the medicine cup, keep it on the outside of the cup. The purpose of keeping it towards the outside of the cup is so the medicine doesn’t get clogged up in the middle, where the air is pushing through. It keeps it clean and able to produce the mist that you need to go into your lungs for your treatment.
The most important part of your nebulizer is doing the treatment! Just do the treatment and feel your best!
