  • Wear comfortable, slip-resistant shoes. Avoid wearing shoes with high heels or loose-fitting shoes that could slip off.
  • Use assistive devices safely. If you use a cane or walker, make sure it is the correct size and that you know how to use it properly.
  • Get regular checkups. Your doctor or conducting a telehealth visit can check for any medical conditions that could increase your risk of falls, such as vision problems or medication side effects.

Creating a Safe Home Environment

  • Remove tripping hazards. This includes throw rugs, clutter, and electrical cords.  
  • Improve lighting. Make sure your home is well-lit, especially at night. You may want to consider installing nightlights in hallways and bathrooms.
  • Install grab bars. Grab bars can be installed in the bathroom and near the toilet to help you maintain balance.  
  • Use non-slip mats in the bathroom. This can help prevent falls in the bathtub or shower.
  • Get help with tasks that are difficult or unsafe. If you have difficulty reaching items on high shelves or lifting heavy objects, ask a friend or family member for help.
